About the Author:

Sarojini Naidu, also known as Sarojini Chattopadhyay, was a freedom fighter, poet, and political leader from India. She was one of the leading figures of the Indian independence movement and was the first woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress. Naidu was also the first woman to become the Governor of an Indian state, serving as the Governor of the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh) from 1947 to 1949. She is known for her poetry, including her collections "The Golden Threshold," "The Bird of Time," and "The Broken Wing." Naidu is often referred to as the "Nightingale of India" due to her poetry.

IN THE BAZAARS OF HYDERABAD SUMMARY

This poem is a conversational poem between the buyer and sellers. This poem was written during the Swadeshi Movement. In order to boycott British products, as part of proving that they never needed foreign products, Sarojini Nayudu went to the bazaars of Hyderabad and started a conversation with various merchants. This is the conversation of Sarojini Nayudu with 8 Kinds of Sellers. In the bazaars of Hyderabad is a conversational and Questionnaire Poem. The summary goes like this:

1st Stanza:

In the first stanza, we can observe that - She is asking the merchants about the Rich's displayed wares like Turbans, Tunics, Mirrors, and Daggers. She was trying to tell that India is a rich country where we can get all things easier.

2nd Stanza:

Then Sarojini Nayudu went to the vendors who weighed several weights on the scale. They answered that they sell all the items like Lentil and Rice. Then she went to the unmarried women, and they replied that they sell and grind sandalwood, henna, and some spices. Then she went to the Pedlars who kept on roaming to sell items. They answered that they sell strong Dice made with ivory and Chessmen.

3rd Stanza:

Then she went to the goldsmiths and asked them what do you make? they answered that they sell wristlets, anklets, Rings, and Bells for the feet of pigeons, girdles for dancers and scabbards for kings.

4th Stanza:

In the next conversation, we can see some fruit-selling men. She asks them what do you sell? they replied that they sell Fruits like Citron, pomegranates, and plums. Then she goes to some musicians and asks them what do you play? they answered that they Played Sitara, Sarangi, and Drum. Then she had a conversation with Magicians about the spells for aeons to come. 

5th Stanza:

Then Sarojini Nayudu goes to some flower-weaving girls and asks them what and why do you weave for? they replied that they weave crowns for the bridegroom for the brow and chaplets for garland and etc.,

Important Meanings:

Crimson: Thick red colour

Tunic: An upper garment but more lengthy than a shirt

Brocade: A thick, rich, gold and silver thread

Amber: Mixture colour of Yellow and Orange

Pedlar: A person who roams to selling

Girdle: A kind of belt ornament for Girls

Scabbard: A cover for the sword.

Azure: Thick Blue

Chaplet: Garland
