ULYSSES - SUMMARY

Alfred Tennyson's poem deals/ begins with his ideal life and desire to reach beyond on limit of once sweet vision/field of view and normal details of day-to-day life.

Ulysses attained old age and he lives with his wife. He feels that he was living among the people who don't know about his greatness. He is interested to continue his travels and achieve more things in his precious life. He spent most of his lifetime on the sea as well as on shore. He has gone through various hurdles and different instances as he gained a lot of experience in his life. So, we can say that he was a person with experience.

He was also a barrier in the Battle of Troy. He fought on behalf of the Greeks and defeated the Trojans. Ulysses is also named Odyssey.

Ulysses is not interested in being an ideal person as king in his life. He has seen many things, visited many places, and experienced enough / a lot of deeds in his life span.

So he doesn't believe that old age is final. There is still in his life so he thinks that something should be done.

He refuses to accept to believe in weakening or fading away in old age. He says Don't think that you are weak because you are old and can't do anything. Moreover, He hopes to live better for the rest of his life. He doesn't examine that life is just mere breathing as living and He thinks that his strength should be used for more adventures in his life.

Ulysses is very thankful that he is still alive and moreover, he feels that he still has work to do and a lot to enjoy.

It Is a shame that Ulysses is idle for three days. He ends up distancing himself and watching his hair turn Grey. He still yearns for knowledge and the means to acquire it.  However, the summary of Ulysses shows how his son Telemachus is the opposite of his father. Telemachus was satisfied to stay in one place. He wished to rule his people with great happiness. Ulysses loves his son and believes he will be a good ruler and honor their family gods.  However, Telemachus lacked his father’s power.

Ulysses also imagines the sea calling him. He recollects the exciting journeys he took with his sailors. Their hearts and minds are free/complimentary.  Although they are old now, they can still do great things. Nevertheless, the day is over, and Ulysses believes it is not too late. It took years for him to discover the new world and reach the shore of the ship. He wants to explore till his last breath and maybe even meet Achilles.

Conclusion:

Ulysses concludes that though he is old, his strength & energy are the same and he has the same good heart as well as a strong will. Thus, he always continues to explore the uncovered world and discover many new things.
