Degree B.Com Computers is the most popular course of all time taken by most of the students. After 12th or Inter, students enter into the correct and systematic study in life. This is where the future and job & career life are built. So, don’t just choose your degree based on peer suggestions/out of your knowledge. Students often feel confused when choosing the right degree course after Inter or 12th. In this article, I will guide you mainly on B.Com & its courses.
Many students know B.Com is related to commerce, accounting, and business, but they are not clear about the BCom full form, subjects, different types of BCom, semester pattern, career options or the difference between BCom General and BCom Computers. So, let me explain it to you clearly.
So, let’s start with the most basic question that everyone has.
The BCom full form is Bachelor of Commerce. It is an undergraduate degree designed around commerce, accounting, finance, business, taxation, economics, management and related areas.
Traditionally, BCom has been a three-year undergraduate programme which is divided into six semesters. The National Credit Framework also recognises a three-year bachelor’s degree as six semesters, while a four-year bachelor’s degree with honours/research corresponds to eight semesters. The exact structure can still differ according to the university and programme. If you want to know the semester structure for B.Com, read below.
Simply, a B.Com degree teaches you how business, money, accounting, and commercial activities work. If you are interested in business jobs/finance jobs or any other jobs related to business, or if you want to start a business, you can choose this blindly.
For example: if you want to start a software business or a clothing business, you can select this. The course can also lead towards banking, finance, taxation, business operations, analytics, sales, management and further professional studies.
A B.Com course gives students a foundation in commerce and business-related subjects.
During the degree, students usually come across topics such as:
The exact combination depends on the university. Each university has its own curriculum and syllabus. The subjects are also changed by the university.
One thing that confuses students is that there is not just one form of B.Com. There are many types of B.Com degrees. You can choose the type based on your future goals and ambitions.
Some common B.Com types include:
For example: Loyola College currently lists B.Com General, B.Com (Accounting & Finance), B.Com (Computer Applications), and B.Com Honours among its commerce offerings. So, when comparing colleges, look at the actual subjects, not just the course title. Please check the subjects before you choose the B.Com and the type of B. Com.
Many students have this most basic question in their mind. That is, B.Com subjects. B.Com has different subjects based on the type of B.Com you choose and the university. At the same time, the language subjects will be the primary change. Some universities do not offer languages as subjects. Students must remember that subjects are changed by 3 filters. 1. University 2. Course you take 3. Semester
However, most B.Com programmes include a combination of accounting, finance, business, and supporting subjects. Some of the commonly seen B.Com subjects are given below:
The BCom subjects of the 1st year are usually designed to build your foundation. Students learn all the fundamentals in this first year.
This is important because first-year subjects are not just random topics. They prepare you for more advanced accounting, finance and business subjects later. A typical first-year BCom curriculum may include
But there is no single BCom first-year syllabus for the whole of India. But the above-mentioned are basic subjects in most of Telangana, for example.
For example, a Telangana-region B.Com. Computer Applications syllabus published by Satavahana University includes Financial Accounting-I, Business Organisation and Management, and Fundamentals of Information Technology, along with language and environmental studies in Semester I. Meanwhile, Delhi University’s current B.Com. (Hons.) Semester I includes Management Principles and Applications, Business Laws and Financial Accounting, with Semester II including Corporate Accounting, Company Law and Human Resource Management. Academic Affairs
The term “B.Com degree semester” simply refers to the semester-wise structure of the degree.
Traditionally, a three-year B.Com course has:
3 Years = 6 Semesters
That means:
B.Com Hons, or BCom Honours, generally refers to a more specialised and academically deeper version of the Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Instead of studying commerce only at a broad level, students may spend more time on advanced accounting, finance, taxation, business analysis, economics, management, and related areas. The curriculum can also include electives and specialised subjects.
For example, Delhi University’s current B.Com. (Hons.) structure includes core subjects such as Financial Accounting, Corporate Accounting, Financial Management, Cost Accounting, Income Tax, Business Analytics, and GST, along with a large range of discipline-specific electives. The BCom Honours subjects can be more detailed than those in a general B.Com programme. In B.Com Honours you really go deeper and make deep research on the topics. Advanced concepts and modules are available in B.Com Honours. The subjects look similarly but the syllabus in it is so wider. In B.Com Honours, students are pushed to perform real-time projects and internships, and they are taken on field trips to explore the business system.
What makes B.Com Honours interesting is that universities are increasingly adding newer areas alongside traditional commerce subjects.
For instance, SRCC’s current programme information mentions areas including finance, marketing, accountancy, tax, international business and business law, along with subjects connected to business analytics, financial technology, data visualisation and AI-related business applications. This is one of the most common questions from commerce students. Even they are often confused about this. But understand the differences very carefully before you choose.
The simple difference is:
B.Com General = broader commerce focus
B.Com Computers = commerce + technology/computer applications
A BCom Computer Applications course does not mean you are turning into a software engineer, by the way! You just get some prior knowledge of computers in performing basic tasks. A little coding, a little digital accounting, a little software, etc. The idea is usually to understand business along with computer applications, data, technology or digital tools.
So the choice depends on the kind of work you see yourself doing in the future. A student who enjoys accounting and traditional commerce may prefer BCom General. A student who likes commerce but also wants more exposure to technology may consider BCom Computer Applications.
When students search for BCom top colleges in India, they usually want colleges with a strong academic environment, established reputation, good faculty, opportunities and career exposure. So that students can get good jobs and internships very soon. If you join in the good reputaion college you will get good placements with high salaries.
These names also appear across the Government of India’s NIRF College rankings, although the NIRF College ranking is an institution-level ranking, not a BCom-specific ranking. In the 2025 College rankings, for example, Hindu College, Hans Raj College, Kirori Mal College, St. Xavier’s College Kolkata, Loyola College and SRCC were all included in the ranked list.
The reality of Jobs after degree is not true in most cases. Because in a degree, you mostly learn the concepts and some practical work, but you won’t get full knowledge. A degree alone doesn’t get you a job. You need to learn more deeply by joining an institution or taking a course from a platform. Personally, after my degree, I did a course called “Financial Modelling and Valuation”, which is very affordable, to learn how to get into a Job. You can check if you want (Tutedudes affordable learning platform).
Finally, Don’t just rely on your degree. In this modern era, a degree doesn’t matter. Your Skills only matter. I strongly suggest that you do a degree along with a skill. You can learn these skills at affordable prices around 700/- from Tutedudes (if you buy from this link, you will get 200/- discount too)
BCom is also a common starting point for students who want to pursue professional qualifications.
Depending on eligibility and the current rules of the relevant professional body, students may explore:
The right option depends on your interests. Someone who enjoys accounting may choose a different path from someone interested in management, finance, analytics or entrepreneurship
